Integrative therapy is an individual and holistic approach to therapy that combines ideas and techniques from different therapeutic models depending on the needs of a person. In practice, merging elements of different psychological theories or modifying standard treatments, integrative approaches can often offer a more flexible approach to treatment and can be used to help people with a variety of difficulties such as low mood, anxiety and unhealthy behaviour patterns.
A strong therapeutic alliance is core to the success of psychotherapy and integrative therapy is no different. Integrative therapy sessions tend to be more inclusive of the client and a treatment focus is established, different therapeutic approaches may be used at different stages, or a single, integrated form of therapy may be used throughout.
With this in mind, integrative therapy may utilise strategies and techniques from cognitive-behavioural therapy, acceptance commitment therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, motivational interviewing, mindfulness, psychodynamic therapy, family systems therapy, gestalt therapy, or trauma-informed therapy.
